Since 2020, Plan International Asia-Pacific has been building one of the most rigorous tools available for measuring girls’ leadership across the region. The Girls’ Leadership Index covers 19 South and Southeast Asian countries and 14 Pacific Island territories. It tracks seven domains – from education and economic opportunity to political voice, protection, and climate action. Together, they map the conditions that allow girls and young women to make decisions, exercise their rights, and influence the issues that shape their lives. The 2022 report was developed in collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute, documenting how girls and young women across the region are demanding climate justice.
The report’s timing was deliberate. COP27 was approaching. Plan International needed the findings to reach beyond the research community and into the spaces where climate commitments are made. That required a report that could function as an advocacy instrument — one that made complex data accessible, centred the voices and lived experiences of young female activists, and was designed to travel across channels and audiences.
Plan International brought us in to give the report that reach. The 2022 Asia-Pacific Girls’ Report: Their Fight for the Future, became both a publication and an advocacy instrument. Its visual identity was rooted in Plan International’s brand, tailored to the specific themes of girls’ leadership and climate action. We translated the Girls’ Leadership Index data into infographics, country profiles, and issue briefs, giving organisations and advocates across the region the visual tools to communicate the findings in their own contexts.
